IVF Acupuncture Support in St Albans

Helping your body — and your mind — through every stage of IVF

IVF is one of the most physically and emotionally demanding things a person can go through. The injections, the waiting, the hope and the heartbreak — all while trying to keep living your normal life.

Acupuncture won’t guarantee an outcome. But it can make a meaningful difference to how your body responds, how you feel throughout the process, and potentially

How acupuncture supports each stage of IVF

  • Before egg collection — ideally 3 months before your cycle begins. Acupuncture improves blood flow to the ovaries, supports hormone regulation, and creates the best possible environment for egg development. Starting three months before your cycle covers the full egg maturation window.
  • During stimulation and follicular development — Regular acupuncture during stimulation helps manage side effects e.g OHSS, reduces anxiety, and supports your body through the significant hormonal demands of the drugs. Two sessions per week may be recommended if previous cycles produced poor results.
  • Between trigger and egg collection — This gives the follicles the final kick for reaching maturity by increasing blood flow.
  • After egg collection — After an invasive internal procedure, it is important to increase blood flow to support recovery and get your body ready for transfer.
  • Around embryo transfer —Acupuncture on or around transfer day supports blood flow to the uterus, reduces uterine contractions, and promotes deep relaxation at the most critical moment of the cycle.
  • Post-transfer (within 24-48 hours) — To encourage implantation and calm the uterus.
  • After a failed cycle — If IVF has not worked, acupuncture helps your body recover, your cycle regulate, and — importantly — gives us the opportunity to review whether there are factors that haven’t yet been investigated or addressed before the next attempt.
  • During the two-week wait  — Anxiety during this period is significant. A treatment focused on nervous system regulation and stress reduction can make this waiting period more bearable.
  • After a positive test (up to 12 weeks) — To support early pregnancy and reduce miscarriage risk.

What I bring to your IVF journey

I’m specifically trained in IVF support protocols through my Advanced Diploma in Fertility Acupuncture and additional training with Paul Johnson at the City College of Acupuncture.

As an affiliate clinic of The Fertility Suite, I’m part of a collaborative network of specialist fertility practitioners — meaning complex cases benefit from shared expertise, not just my own.

I can also help you navigate the clinical side of IVF: understanding your results, identifying which questions to ask at your clinic, and identifying additional tests that might improve your chances before the next cycle.

IVF acupuncture protocol — session timing guide

For patients going through IVF, I recommend the following as a starting guide (adjusted to your individual situation):

  • Down regulation phase — 1 to 2 treatments
  • Stimulation phase — regular treatments throughout (2 per week if previous cycles produced poor egg numbers or thin lining)
  • Between trigger injection and egg collection — 1 treatment
  • Post egg retrieval — 1 treatment, particularly important if you’re at risk of OHSS or have PCOS
  • Embryo transfer — treatment on or as close to transfer day as possible
  • Two-week wait — 1 de-stress treatment

Frequently asked questions

Is there evidence that acupuncture helps with IVF? There is a growing body of research on acupuncture and IVF outcomes, particularly around embryo transfer. Studies have looked at effects on uterine blood flow, implantation rates, and stress markers during the IVF process. Research links are on the Fertility Resources page.

When should I start acupuncture before IVF? Ideally three months before your cycle begins, covering the full egg maturation period. Starting later is still beneficial — even beginning in the weeks before transfer makes a difference.

Can I have acupuncture during IVF stimulation? Yes, and many women find it particularly helpful during this phase for managing side effects, improving blood flow to the ovaries, and managing anxiety.

What if my previous IVF cycles have failed? A failed cycle is heartbreaking — and it’s also a signal to review everything before trying again. I’ll look carefully at your history and test results to identify what may have been missed, and work to prepare your body as thoroughly as possible for the next attempt.

Can acupuncture help with OHSS risk? Post-retrieval acupuncture is particularly recommended for women at risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). It supports recovery from the retrieval procedure and helps regulate the body’s response.

Do you work alongside my IVF clinic? Yes. I work in a complementary capacity alongside your clinic. I’m happy to help you understand your results and navigate your care, and can flag questions worth raising with your consultant.
